Club Background
Maties Ultimate, previously known as Stellenbosch Ultimate, was founded from a group of university students and alumni. We come from far-flung origins as the Akkerdiske, who participated in the first ever SA Nationals (2000). From there we went from casual pickups running between 2005-2010 to becoming an official university sports club in 2012.
Ultimate in Stellenbosch has been alive for the last 25 years. Highlights include Maties Women’s finishing second at OWN 2015 and first in OWN 2021. The mixed team came 3rd at Mixed Nationals 2024. In 2019, our Residence League held its first fixtures and our Internal Draft League (IDL) kicked off in February 2024, both courtesy of the efforts of Johann Harzon.
From the fields by the Hangbrug to the Woestyn to Lentelus to Coetzenburg B our paths have led and from there we are prepared to launch and make a name for ourselves in Ultimate South Africa at large.
Club Ethos
We strive to represent the University of Stellenbosch to the best of our ability. On the Ultimate field we strive to have both excellent sportsmanship and a competitive spirit. We do not play as individuals but give all that we can for the larger Maties team whose ultimate goal is to win championships. Development is an equally critical initiative at Maties and we dedicate ourselves to hosting entry-level leagues and continuously exposing new players to the sport. Ultimately, we strive to “Gooi die disc!”
What kind of player would be a good fit with your club?
We have something for everyone. We have two training sessions per week where we focus on advanced Ultimate skills and strategy. These sessions prepare us to play in local leagues as well as regional and national tournaments in all three divisions (Opens, Women’s and Mixed). We also have two casual sessions a week, which is open to anyone.
We are a university affiliated sport, therefore most of our players are Stellenbosch university students. However, as we are currently the only Ultimate frisbee club in the Stellenbosch area and surrounds, we welcome external, non-SU students as members to join our club.
Additional Fixtures
Finally, we host 3-6 Bumper Evenings a year, at the discretion of Stellenbosch University, and 3-4 Hat Tournaments throughout the year. These are:
Welcoming Tournament: An introduction to ultimate based on our casual pickup rules, usually in term 1.
Crosshatched Frisbee: a fancy dress frisbee festival where two games take place on the same field, usually in term 2.
Fly By Night: an LED tournament featuring light-up discs and glowsticks, usually in term 3.
Huck in die Bosch: our classic hat tournament with a long legacy and historical heritage (usually on 24 September).
If you are a frisbee fan in Stellenbosch, reach out. We’d love to throw some disc with you.
