Jula iSitya Non-Profit Organisation
Who Is Jula iSitya:
Jula iSitya (an isiXhosa phrase meaning "Throw A Plate") is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town. The idea for Jula iSitya was first conceptualized by Asanda Nanise in 2021. Asanda grew up in Khayelitsha and started playing Ultimate Frisbee at the age of eleven. Asanda often credits Ultimate Frisbee for his own journey to getting out of the cycle of poverty. Jula iSitya was founded on Asanda's vision to help youth from marginalized backgrounds, and to enable them to uplift themselves out of the cycle of poverty through the sport of Ultimate Frisbee and by teaching program participants the principles of Spirit Of The Game©️.
Jula iSitya became a registered NPO in January 2024 and has active programs running in several schools and in Pollsmoor Prison.
How Is Jula iSitya Developing Communities Through Ultimate Frisbee?
Pollsmoor Prison Program:
Jula iSitya hosts weekly Ultimate Frisbee sessions for inmates at Pollsmoor Prison. The focus of this program is to not only designed to build physical fitness amongst inmates but also to use the transformative potential of Spirit Of The Game©️ to teach inmates crucial life skills like effective communication, respectful conduct, and fair competition to help them navigate their journey to rehabilitation. This program also provides inmates with a community they can transition back into once their sentences end and they are released back into society.
The program was initially scheduled to run for six weeks but Correctional Services has requested an extension of the program for an additional six weeks.
School's Program:
Having started an Ultimate Frisbee training program in 2022 for twenty learners of Apex High School, the program has now grown to facilitate forty learners and an additional three schools have joined the training program. Training takes place twice a week with learners and an Inter-School's League has been established which Jula iSitya hosts every second Friday of the month.
