School’s update #3

Hi there fellow flying disc enthusiasts! There is some super exciting stuff happening behind the scenes of The- Unofficial-Cape-Town-Ultimate-Schools-League-Initiative. Would be nice to let everyone hear what’s been going on!

Bergvliet enters their second month of Ultimate playing. 20 kids plus have been showing their commitment every week at BHS Ultimate practices on Mondays. Steve P has fallen into the position of head coach, with the regular to not-so-regular help from the very helpful Chris, Bridget, Hannah, Darryn and myself. (Hope I haven’t forgotten anyone!)

Apart from Mondays, the kids throw disc around during breaks and PT, and were wanting another day of coaching as well! This keenness and enthusiasm we are seeing is just the tip of the Ultimate iceberg! We have thousands of kids in CT just waiting for the opportunity to play a sport that “is not kak.” Perhaps one of the most exciting questions asked by the kids (frequently) is “Who can we play against?”

Which brings me to more good news:

Brent and myself had a meeting with Waldorf Constantia this morning, and we have a spot in assembly on the first day of next term to present Ultimate to another excitable horde of adolescents! 2nd school on board!

The International school heard mention of what we were doing, and contacted us asking if we could come to their school. As Brent so nicely put it, the boulder that has been pushed so slowly up the hill has now started rolling on its own and we are being left behind in the dust.

We need volunteers! We need help because by September we aim to have 6 schools on board, which means 12 coaches! Contact me or anyone else involved if you think you can steal away from work for 2 hours once a week, if you are your own boss, or if you just feel like quitting your job and playing ultimate, like Mike.

Pull together Ultimate players!
Cheers
Jonno

Schools Exhibition Game

Here’s the report back from Jonno about the Exhibition game held at Bergvliet High on Thurs 13th during their school assembly:Hi all…

The game was great! In the *flipping* windy sense! We had 15 players, in red and blue, with Ant commentating and cracking jokes about Pinky’s height over a PA system, blaring over a crowd of about 600 kids.

We had representatives from Ambassadors, Cape Disc Doctors and Chilli at the game, and it was awesome! Red kicked off to a flying lead of 2-0 and then 3-1, with Blue springing to the occasion drawing the game AS the bell rang 5-5.

It was windy, veeery windy. Lots of turn overs, and a number of cracking catches, swiftly followed by a choir of “OOOH’s” and “AAAH’s”. Its a hell of a thing having a great crowd like that. Watch this space! Ultimate is only going in ONE direction from here.

Guys, well done on a super successful game! We got what we wanted: a little kid walked up to me after the game, and said “Where can I go to play this?” Another one, who already attends practice asked “Can I come play with you guys at pickup?”

Onwards and Upwards!

Jonno

HEADS UP:
Next exhibition game will be held at Waldorf Constantia between the 8th and the 11th of April. Clear your calendars, submit your leave, this is gonna be an awesome game!

Schools ultimate update #2

Update 2A: Thanks to the work of Jonno, Chris, Steve and Neal, the Bergvliet kids are so enjoying ultimate that they would like to play a second day a week – on Thursdays. This is fantastic news! So, to keep the momentum, we would like to know if it is possible for the existing trainers could maybe split into two for Monday and two for Thursday? And… if there are any other people who can now help out on Monday or Thursday?

Update 2B: The good news continues: As mentioned earlier, the BHS folks want an exhibition game to showcase Ultimate. Watch this space for final info on a date, but so far we have 16 players available to play … in front of 1 000 screaming high schoolers. Woohoo!

Cape Town, if you want to get involved, now is your chance! Let Jonno know if you are keen to help spread some Ultimate joy and play in the exhibition game, or help train on Thursdays. His details are here, or leave a comment on this page.

Schools ultimate update #1

News just in from Jonno about Ultimate Evolution:

On Monday at 3, the first coaching session went down really nicely..
Myself (Jonno), Chris and Neal went along. In the end there were only 9 learners including the life skills teacher (coach to be) and his wife. The energy and the vibe amongst the kids was great and after spending about 40 minutes on fore/backhand throwing we had a very informal fun little game. I promised that i would produce photos of the guys throwing around but i clean forgot (sorry brent!) watch this space for some next week!

The life skills teacher Lloyd mentioned that he wanted to start another practice on another day, perhaps wednesday for those who want to play twice a week and others who are busy on a monday. We were also talking about an exhibition game, and although i hear nationals will be played at BHS, i was thinking it would be good to do something sooner than that.

Lloyd also said he’d love some ultimate players to come promote the sport during PT periods during the day…

Perhaps i’m jumping our good organisers’ guns, but is there anyone who would be available to play a pickup game at Bergvliet during the day? 10 people should do it although the more the merrier as well!

Is there anyone available to come help out with coaching on mondays? Anyone for running a PT lesson in the name of furthering ultimate?

Hands on deck!

Sounds great! Please leave a comment here, or email Jonno (jonno.lui@gmail.com) if you can help. Please also stay in touch with Brent if you can help with Ultimate Evolution at all.

It begins… in the schools.

Hi CPT Ultimate players!

By now, you have read our strategy for 08/09 – Ultimate Evolution!

Our goal – 50 competitive team by Jan 2010!

Our focus for this year is starting a schools league. We have exciting news.
Bergvliet high school is starting a pick up game this Monday. We are going to run it as a trial before starting a league with other schools in the summer terms.

Here is your opportunity to get involved in Ultimate evolution! We have developed an eight week ultimate training program to help assist trainers to train new players. We also have discs and cones. Now we need some players to help train the kids to play ultimate!

The pick up game will be every Monday from 3-4pm. Your involvement will need to be for 8 weeks until the BHS teacher is up-to-speed!

So, let Brent know if you are available and keen!
