Skillz n Thrillz Women’s Hat Tournament

A first for South Africa!

Despite huge growth in recent years, the South African Ultimate community still has a long way to go in terms of size and outreach, most notably when it comes to the representation of women in the sport. Since 2010, in an effort to bridge the skills-gap between male and female players, a few women in Cape Town have been organising training sessions and events that focus on welcoming new faces and introducing them to the sport. In the spirit of creating a supportive environment in which to learn the basics and develop as a player, Cape Town Ultimate hosted South Africa’s first ever women’s-only tournament and skills clinic on March 10th 2012 at Villagers Football Club, with the generous support of Rafiki’s Bar.

The event was a huge success, gathering 30 women (some from as far as Johannesburg!) for a day of competitive matches and skills clinics. The women were divided into four equal teams and faced off 5 on 5 in three rounds of pool play. In between the second and third games, participants went through a series of skills clinics focusing on basic defensive positioning and proper form when diving for the disc. The day was capped with an exciting final between two very evenly matched teams.

Rafiki’s Bar provided support in the form of prizes and much-needed umbrellas providing shade on the sidelines. MVP winner Katie Huston, Best D winner Lillian Maboya, Best Layout in a Game winner Laura Barclay and Most Successful Layout Drill Cady Roberts got their pick of either a Rafiki’s voucher or a brand new disc. The winning team and runner up also got to take home Rafiki’s swag. Check out Cape Town Ultimate’s Facebook page for pictures from the day!

The next opportunity so see Cape Town’s women in action will be at the 2012 SAFDA National Championship, held in Cape Town from April 27th to April 29th. The Cape Town ladies will be facing off against Johannesburg in an exhibition game on Friday evening, on the Villager Football Club main field. See you there!

Spring League Results

Spring League finished off with a really enjoyable social evening, huge kudo’s must go to Brianna and Nicola for organising the league and the boerie rolls.

Spring League this year was as closely fought as ever with the log pretty much tied up until the halfway mark. By the time it was play off stage it was still uncertain who the favourites were to win. The final was a fun game to watch from the sideline with much of the obligatory heckling and hoots of appreciation.

Congratulations to BAM who won the league in the end, and also to the prize winners:

MVP: Ian, Finn (tied) & Colleen

Most Improved: Mike Warren & Alicia

Fastest Legs: Keenan & Julia

Best Layout: Joe

Thanks to everyone that joined in the fun and we look forward to Summer League 2012!

UCT Disc Golf

UCT Ultimate recently developed an 18 hole disc golf course with a par of 68. I don’t have pictures yet, but i can tell you that its an urban course that takes you around middle and upper campus. Because of the close proximity to cars and windows, only 175 gram ultrastars or similar ultimate discs are permitted.

What makes this course so fun and unique is of course the location. Overlooking the city of Cape Town, the course will take you through lush green gardens, archways, pine forests, rugby fields, avenues, tennis courts and even food courts! Situated on the slopes of Table Mountain, some tees will have you driving over small cliffs with breathtaking views and mind-blowing distance!
Due to the location being crowded, non UCT players will only be permitted to play in tournaments held during holidays which will be officially advertised by UCT Ultimate.
For more information, email uctultimate.info@gmail.com
The next tournament will be held in December. More information to follow!

Division in the ranks…

Cape Town Ultimate is taking a big step towards advancing the sport in the best city in the world.

We are splitting up the men from the ladies for 6 weeks from the 5th September and running a competitive Open League alongside the already successful Womens Training. The boys and girls will get to work on their top end skills in separate corners and match up again at the upcoming Spring League to see who has improved the most.

Next year we hope to have an Open and Womens league! Email us if you would like to get involved.

Nationals 2011

Cape Town was represented by FIVE teams in Johannesburg for the 2011 edition of the South African nationals.   The tournament format maximized competitive games leading up to a fierce knock-out stage.    Well done to UCT New Boots (11th or 3rd of the bottom 8 teams), Zebru (7th ), UCT Ikeys Tigers (4th), Chilli (3rd), and new SA National champion Khayoba!  Khayoba defeated Long Donkeys in the finals with a great display of passing and finesse in what was a fantastic game of Ultimate.  If you missed any of the action of their dramatic run to the championship, you can see catch up by checking out their blog or the Cape Argus.   Congratulations Khayoba!

Summer League Results 2011

The Cape Town Summer League Finals took place last Monday on a cold and windy evening  at the UCT pitches.

The UCT A side faced up against the oldies in Salusa in the 3rd place playoff. This was a very tight and dramatic game with both teams taking the lead at various times in the match. UCT with an early lead and Salusa fighting back hard in the second half to take the game 15-13. These guys really put on a good show for the spectators who braved the cold to watch the final games.

The experience of Chilli took on the youth of Khayoba in the Final which was also a highly competitive game. Khayoba came out firing in spite of missing some of their top guns. The two teams traded downwind points for the first quarter before Chilli stuck a score in the upwind endzone. From there the Chilli offense settled down and held off the fiery attack of Khayoba. Showing slick movement of the disc and hard running on defence they managed to pull ahead for a comfortable win and their third Summer League trophy in four years.

Well done Chilli and good luck to all Cape Town teams competing at Nationals in Johannesburg at the end of this month.
